Steve -
I live about 90 minutes south of the Dragon, and usually hit it a couple of
times a year. I would only consider going during the week, early morning,
Weekends are getting crowded, yes.
You are correct that it is somewhat overrated, but there are a LOT of roads
in the area that are just as good, some better. The Dragon has the endless
curves, but some are quite tight and it is really hard to get a rhythm.
Then the traffic issue. If you are just cruising (I get it, HD guys) there
will always be someone in your rear-view mirror. If you are the fast guy,
you will be in someone else's mirror. Don't get me wrong - do it, but If
you can work out staying in the area a few days, there are a ton of country
roads up there with more flowing curves and beautiful scenery. You will
have a great time exploring.
Redards, Ted

Subject: [Ducati] Re: Barber and the Dragon
In my process of "retired guy checking things off "the list", the dragon
has always been one, although I read more and more that it doesn't have the
same appeal it used to because of overcrowding, which as a 69 yr old can
associate with regarding all sorts of shit I've done over the years. I did
all of Skyline Dr last year on my ride from Jersey to Barber for the
festival, and that was very enjoyable in October. I imagine that it also
becomes much more crowded in the "premium" months. How did you find your
October experience, Tom?

Thanks for the feedback, Ted. I agree that the lesser known jewels are
often more enjoyable because they won’t typically be crowded. One of the
joys of retirement is that I CAN choose to do things on weekdays, and I CAN
stay where I want for a few days, so I’ll have to pull out the Butler map
and look around the vicinity of the Dragon for some fun roads this Spring
