98 900ss cr Fork Upgrade?

Thinking about upgrading the stock forks on my sons's 900sscr.
Any input would be appreciated.

  1. Upgrade stock internals with a RaceTech emulater type kit a local
suspension guy says he can do
  2. Source 94-98 900ss adjustable forks
  3. Are there Monster or other forks that will swap on?
  4. Will I need triples as well as tubes or just tubes?

TIA.

I sent my M796 forks (worst forks ever) to Traxxion Dynamics.  They
installed their kit, custom machined a set of fork caps, and anodized
the upper tubes for me.  Now both forks are adjustable for pre-load, one
fork handles the compression damping (adjustable), the other fork
handles rebound damping (adjustable).  They work better than I
expected.......I highly recommend it.

Any stock forks pretty much suck.  They're all built to a low spec, but are
painted/anodized gold so they look awesome.  Even the stock Ohlins stuff is
pretty much garbage.  For me, that would rule out swapping for another set
of adjustable stock forks.

I've always had good luck with emulators (Race-Tech specifically) and have
also had success with Ed Sorbo who now owns Lindemann Engineering.  It's a
good idea to find someone you can TALK to about it - tell them what you
want, and work with them to get you in the ballpark with the solution.
Then, with adjustability, you can fine tune the ride.

Good luck - suspension is completely different for everyone, and nearly
every ride.  Find a happy place and know that it's great 95% of the time
(for street riding anyway).

Brian,
I can't comment on items 3 & 4, having never owned a Monster.

In response to your items 1&2, back in the era of these bikes, often owners
would send the Marzocchi non-adjustable forks to RaceTech, who would fit
springs, oil, etc., to those forks to match up with rider weight and riding
style.  Those forks were an improvement over the forks stock out of the
factory, but were still non-adjustable, so that any changes in rider where
the rider weight was different, riding style/aggressiveness was different,
could not be compensated for by fork adjustments, since they were still
non-adjustable.  I did this shortly after purchasing my 1996 900SSCR.  Later
I purchased a set of Showa Adjustable Forks off of a 900SSSP from Mark
Hatten of Wounded Duc, who is a list member.  You can also find them on
eBay.  I then had those forks RaceTech'd, and they are currently on my bike.
These are not inexpensive mods.  Particularly the replacement of the non-adj
forks with adj forks.  Not that they are not worth doing, as I've done both,
but if you were to go out and purchase adjustable forks and then send them
to RaceTech or someone similar for their treatment, you'd likely spend
approaching $1,000 for the purchase of the forks, shipping, and then the
RaceTech (or equal) work.  The mods to the existing non-adjustable forks
would be less expensive as you would only have to pay for the fork work and
you could use the current forks.  There will be limitations.  If your son
wants to do track work, the non-adjustable Marzocchi's will not be able to
be adjusted for the more aggressive track riding.  However, if the bike will
be used purely for street riding, that shouldn't be too much of a
limitation.  Good Luck!
Dennis

Hello Brian,
I found a cycle cat upper triple and sourced a set of 748 Showa forks off E bay
Cost was right around 600.00 including the adapter bushings I had done by Fast Frank.
Best money ever spent on the CR..
Then I found a great price on an Ohlins adjustable rear shock and it was even better money well spent...
This was done over a 2-3 year period
The forks I found were already set up ffor a 225 pd rider..The shock also..
Total cost for both was 1K dollars U.S.
These bikes are a HUGE bang for the buck..
I have since purchased a 944 kit and it is ready for install..
Looking forward toa fast 2017!!

Brian,

I thought I'd throw out a few thoughts just to try to help with your
decision process.

The 94-98 adjustable Showa doesn't work any better than the nonadjustable
version, really.  That's a waste of money if you really want a suspension
that works.

Monster or other forks that might swap on are likewise ineffective.....even
the ones that say "Ohlins" on them.  OEM forks are almost always geared
toward some theoretical "average person" who doesn't exist, so a fork set
up for you and the way you ride is always the right answer.  The casing is
almost irrelevant as long as it isn't so small it flexes around like a
noodle.

The best bang for the buck is always in either new valving for the fork you
have or a complete cartridge insert (as Tim was describing) for the fork
you have.

Don't forget the shock!

I had my '95 900SS-CR's non-adjustable forks given the RaceTech treatment
by my local RT guy, but didn't think the slight improvement I felt was
worth the money I spent.

I installed a pair of three-way adjustable forks from an 888, along with
fresh fork oil, on my '97 M900 and was quite pleased with the results.
They fit the OE triple clamp just fine.  I'm pretty sure the same forks
would also fit your CR.

Both bikes spent most of their lives on the street, with an occasional
track day event.

I'm probably going to try and stay in the $500-$750 range.
The info has been much appreciated.

Thanks.
