Wow -- that's indeed sad news.  He was my superhero racer back in the days -- this I wrote 26 years ago (April 20, 1998) and posted on this very forum:

Hey kids...
...at Laguna Seca yesterday after the race, I actually spoke with Anthony Gobert in the pit next to the Vance & Hines trailer.  Below is an approximate dialog of our conversation:

Me:  "Are you... Gobert?!"

[he turns away from the conversation he has with four guys, and says]

Go:  "Yes"

Me:  "So what happen out there... I didn't see you on the warm-up lap??"

[he replies with a thick Australian dialect]

Go:  "Oh I was laayt"

Me:  "Ehe... what?"

Go:  "I was too laayt"

Me:  "Laaoyt..?...you were.... what??"

[the fact that fifty extremely loud vintage bikes were on the brink to start a race didn't make this conversation anymore comprehensive]

Go:  "I was running laayt"

Me:  "Aha, you were late"

[as Gobert finishes his big can of Foster's]

Go:  "Yeah, the race official just waived me off"

Me:  "Oh, that's too bad... to start off on cold tires"

Go:  "Awh, it's okaay... next taaym I'll be on taaym... "

And then he asks if I'd like to test-ride his Ducati.  Since I didn't think he was serious, I said: "Sure, why not".  So directly after the vintage race was over, I got my leathers and blasted around the track on his Duc... yeehaa!!  However, since the tires were quite shot at that point I didn't go flat out... but man, that bike is fast.  Coming out of turn 11 I did a standing power wheelie as I waived to the guys in the pit.  After I cruised into the pit lane, Terry Vance asked me if I was interested to race one of his bikes, but as some of you know, I'm already committed to a career of collecting empty bottles (after emptying them mostly myself), so I politely turned down this otherwise tempting offer.

Hey, I got you going there... didn't I..?!  To tell you the truth, everything up till the point where Gobert offered me to ride his bike is actually true (including him drinking the huge can of Foster beer).  He's a really friendly guy -- I almost kicked myself for not asking him more about other stuff, but I felt like not to bothering him anymore since he was so kind to break away from his initial conversation with those other guys.  BTW, the race was kind of boring -- it was actually more fun last weekend at the AFM at Sears Point.

I don’t get what happened here (not your story Peer).  Big “he’s back” announcement and video, then literally within a day or two he’s on his deathbed.

Something very fishy (and certainly movie worthy) is going on here.
