If you read the original article in Autosport, it mentions that he was on a 
1000cc Honda Superbike racing against mostly amateurs in a 600cc +10 lap 
race.  Two pro German Superbike champs (on 1000cc bikes) were also in the 
race (Bauer & Meklau).  They finished 1 and 2.  Mike was 3rd. Even though 
Mike won the pole, he elected to start from the rear along with the pro 
riders.
Never-the-less, even against amateurs, it is quite an accomplishment.  Some 
of the"amateurs" I know are very good.  Just look at those crazy dudes who 
race in the Isle of Man TT.  Last year, they ran a 130mph lap-on the 
street-between the houses!
