"doing about 110-115 kph @5000 rpm in top gear and this seems a bit too low
a gearing"
Over the last almost 30 years I've run almost every gear combination
available for a Ducati.
I've been running a 520 - 14/43 for the last 35,000 mi. on Termi kitted
S4R/RS and really like it. It is a little low for the super slab, but thank
God, I don't have to ride on the interstates much. Still pulls over 150 mph
too and gets there quickly.
With the 1.84/1 transmission the 14/43 is good for about 4000 rpm at 100
km/hr (62 mph). I find that just perfect for crusing 6th gear, which is
otherwise useless for legal speeds on our two lane roads around here if
running the stock 15/43 gears.
I've been getting 15,000 mi. on a set of gears and chain and there seems to
be plenty like left at that. I ride a little over 1000 mi. a month so I use
a steel rear for longer wear.
520 w/Quick change carrier is the way to go.
