Well, Pneumatic valve systems have about the same friction as a coil 
spring system.  They are just lighter and more reliable at higher 
speeds.  The way of the future will be electronic control with stepper 
motors or hydraulic actuation.  Even more toys to play with, not just a 
good degreeing job, but mapping the valve timing curves on your ECU. :-)
