Hey everyone. Been away but watching for a while. I had to jump in
on this thread and put in my 2 cents on backpacks. I've done this a
couple of times and every time I've done it I've paid the price.
Either with so much weight I though I was going to crack my spine or
having left too much behind in order not to crack my spine. I
seriously suggest letting the machine do the carrying if you can.
Last year I was trying to find the Dowco bags they show in their ads
for the 999/749, but couldn't. So I headed out with 40lbs on my back
in the middle of summer--only to turn around after 40 miles and drop
the bike off in exchange for the Jeep. Horrible!
I love the Ortlieb bags for outdoor camping/cycling, so I bet they'd
be great if you can keep them away from your exhaust.
All this said, my itch for a BMW (gasp!) is a direct result of wanting
for space and ability to travel on dirt without having a pack on my
back. Sigh...
