using first gear multiplies the torque you're putting on the crank, which will easily over power the rear brake.  270nm on the crank is probably nearly 4 times what your engine puts out, so there's a lot of load on everything through the system.  if you want to use the rear wheel use 6th.  that drops the torque at the rear wheel as much as possible.

if it's a '97 then it should have a 2 phase alternator - small rotor on the crank (70mm or so od), not a big magnet dish.  the torque on them is only 180Nm.
