congrats on the easy remove. it's a bit worrying if it comes straight off. the taper is what transfers the power. the key is just a locater. if the nut comes loose and the taper set lets go the key will shear off very quickly.
the issue with that is that, while the motor will still run happliy, the oil pump is no longer being driven.
as for end float - it's not meant to have any, it's meant to have preload. if it has end float now, there's a problem. there's no point measuring it now, you need to measure and set it when the cases go back together. you can if you want to, but it's a waste of time.
