we use a basic chinese hydraulic puller with the two leg attachment for getting pd gears off. we can get ours in nicely behind the gear and against the case at the top right from memory. i leave the nut on, but loose as can be with still full engagement. heating the gear with a heat gun can also help. don't expect it to come off easily. you'll need to go very tight on the puller and it'll go "BANG" and scare the shit out of you.
we use any sort of metric dial indicator, but mainly mitutoyo. drill a hole in a piece of steel for a magnetic base and screw it down to a hole in the cases. i assemble the cases with the crank inside and measure the up and down movement (cases laying on rh side), best done with a long screwdriver between rh case and crank web. if it's a 3 phase crank you need two of the thinnest (1.90mm) shims fitted to do this as the radius on the crank that sits against the bearing is bigger than the bearing radius and gives a incorrect result without the relieved shims.
