I've been blessed with American cars (metric and English fittings on same vehicle), British bikes (English/American fittings along with CEI, Whitworth, & BA fittings again all on the same bike) and Japanese and European bikes (metric but can have a rare klinker thrown in with the difference in JIC and European standards). So I have a significant set of tools to cover all bases along with a bunch of "homemades".
Especially on the more expensive machinist measuring tools, a dual reading tool is good to have. It can convert the same reading to both standards. Thus my recomendation on the electronic 0-1"/0-25mm reading micrometer. Same for the electronic "dial" calipers.
I also bought a calculator from Radio Shack years ago (actually a half dozen or so, one for work, one for my gunsmithing, one for the bike shop, one for the bed nigth stand [I read alot of tech stuff on bikes and guns] and one here at the computer) that converts between metric and English standards on a lot of fields, in/cm. yds/mtrs, F/C, mile/km, etc. It is REAL handy.
So, a person needs to buy to their particular situation. And remember, he who dies with the most tools (substitute bikes, or cars, or guns, etc) wins! <LOL>
A Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year everybody!
