My sincere thanks to everyone for their input.  Ducati NA was pleasant
to deal with, and said they would engage the dealership to discuss.
I'll report back.   

The Recall info was critical--I can't see how they can deny the
responsibility to remedy if my MC fits the recall profile exactly.  If
they do balk, I can always engage with the NHTSA for
assistance--manufacturers really do not like it when they have to go
that route.  (I was intimately involved with another recall and learned
a lot from that experience). 

FWIW, I have never fiddled with the bike, and all mods were done by the
dealer.  I do suspect the 998 may have done something to the new bike
out of jealousy...
