the carb 600 - 750 - 900 SS models run an in tank electric low pressure pump
that runs continuously, with the fuel doing laps thru the fuel hoses and back to
the tank.

the carb monster models run vacuum pumps.

the fuel injected bikes run in tank electric high pressure pumps. all the
variations of ecu run the pumps for a certain amount of time at every key on.
the later ecus tend to run them for less time. it is simply a time thing -
there's no pressure sensor. pressure is controlled by a bypass flow type
regulator. on earlier bikes the fuel does laps past the injectors and back into
the tank. on later models the injectors are at the end of the hose.

most of the new bmw models are running a pressure sensor instead of a regulator
and pumps driven by stepped voltage to control the pressure, but not ducati
afaik.
