I thought I would try to replace my speedo cable and was a bit surprised to
find the mirror mount bolt holes in the plastic slightly enlarged with a
1/16 inch hairline crack radiating from the hole.
I got some 1/4 inch rubber grommets from the hardware store and put them in
the fairing holes and now feel much better about potential rubbing and
cracking from vibration.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Do the grommets seem like a good
idea or will they in fact cause extra stress because the fairing does not
fit exactly as it was designed to fit?
I also added some 1/4 inch nylon bushings to the holes where the fairing
bolts to the front subframe, so now there is no metal (bolt) to plastic
contact. These do not alter the positioning at all, but do make it a
tighter fit for the bolt. Next I will add those rubber backed washers to
these points (as someone suggested some time ago).
