Personally with the old Michelin TX 25/ TX 15 I preferred170 because
handling was better, as the 170 tire was noticeably ligther. On top of that
chain clearance with 180/55 was very small.
Today with Sportec M1/ M3 I use 180/55. For some reason chain clearance is
better, handling is similar than 170', and side grip is of course higher
with 180'.
Technically a 5,5" rim is intended for 180, and 5,0" for 170. I have a
Carrozzeria 5,5" rear wheel; at time of puchase 5,0" rear wheel was not
available from them.
Longer shock improves handling and front end feel. I raised the rear about
5/8" (at the wheel) on Chris Kelley recomendation and I am very satisfied. I
wil still try closer to 1" but at this point I'm enjoing the bike as it is,
before going further.
Best Regards/ Antonio
95' 900SS
