Well put Rich. I couldn't agree more.

I think it misses the point, sure you could take a large number of other
bikes and throw everything at them and get perhaps a really special bike for
less than 72k, but it still would not be a Ducati RR. On some level a well
crafted bike is an organic thing, not just a platform for parts. Or are some of
the opinion that a bike is simply the sum of its parts? I can tell you that is
not a true statement as I have personal experince spending lots of money on
quality parts and finding the net result not much better than the unadorned
stock bike. I think many of us here have been down that road a time or two. The
hope is to add by degree to that organic wholeness or maybe remove a awart
or two from an otherwise perfect form. But it aint all about parts price
totals. I could easily create a 72000 dollar motorcycle with little trouble...but
what would it be in the end. A work of art or Richs parts house. Eh, there
may be a few Alex's around here with the time
and the eye to creat unique works of art in motrocycle form, but most of us
its just about parts...we depend on the factories talent to create the
artwork for the most part. And Ducati does that well I think.

There my also be other angles on this. Perhaps Ducati doesn't make any
money on the hike. A 1000 unit loss leader might make very good
business sence (as long as they are not loosing too much on each one).
Another angle may be that MCN meant "take another 200hp platform and
trick it out with all the best bits and maybe you would come in under
$72000". Alex would definitely know about this.

I'm not one to second-guess him. He knows more about motorcycles and racing
than I ever will.

Ducati's cost of the parts. Obviously they cost less than $72,000 to purchase all
the parts, otherwise Ducati could not make a profit on them, no? So it has to
cost them less than $72k to purchase all this stuff (because Ducati actually
makes very few components, if any; they assemble everything from suppliers),
and judging from their profitability lately, there's a nice margin.

bought every part seperately; in that case, you would pay a lot more than $72k,
but you would pay that much for a GSXR1000 is you bought it part-by-part as
well, no?
