Nick Ienatsch said it, and then looked over the text and gave it his okay. I'm not one to second-guess him. He knows more about motorcycles and racing than I ever will.
If you think about it, you can take that statement two ways: one is Ducati's cost of the parts. Obviously they cost less than $72,000 to purchase all the parts, otherwise Ducati could not make a profit on them, no? So it has to cost them less than $72k to purchase all this stuff (because Ducati actually makes very few components, if any; they assemble everything from suppliers), and judging from their profitability lately, there's a nice margin.
The other way to look at it is if you walked into a Ducati dealer and bought every part seperately; in that case, you would pay a lot more than $72k, but you would pay that much for a GSXR1000 is you bought it part-by-part as well, no?
I will let Nick know as politely as I can that he has no idea what he is talking about.
