Rossi [tells us that] he didn't switch to Yamaha for the money, but for the challenge. I don't believe for one second that he wouldn't put his heart and soul into a championship even if he were racing for free. And if he was perceived as slacking one bit, what do you think the Gazetto della Sport would say?
In any case, this wouldn't work. The money that Ducati paid the gov't on Rossi's behalf would be attributed back to him as income and he'd have to pay tax on that, too.
