2000 916?  Did you perhaps mean a 996?

Not a hard swap -- lots of people have done it.  Your 97 has a 2-phase charging system, if I recall correctly, whereas the 996 has a three-phase.  The 996 also uses dual-injector throttle bodies.  Easiest way to make the swap is to pick up the 996 wiring harness, voltage regulator, and throttle bodies along with the engine.  You'll also need a 996 chip for the ECU.
