Your assessment is right on Alex, Minoli said as much in a recent interview.
Since Ducati had the 1200cc limit they'd wanted for the twins they had no
need to even consider the Desmo and the Sedici crowd/market was considered
also with no intention to produce anymore. I don't see them doing so down the
road either unless they radically downgrade parts quality to keep the price
reasonable.
We already know there's a new monster coming out, I hope we see a new or
special SS, I hear an F1 inspired machine is probable, and a 1098 based naked is
past due. None of these would or should be in the $40k range though so that
would have to be the S or R model 1098 but that's no surprise either.

crying to get 1200cc twins, I can't see it would be a public relations
disaster in my opinion. Now two years from now absolutely I would bet on it.
