Makes sense

It has to be tough for the rider as teams are sponsored for the bike (name)
in order to sell more bikes. To fans Rides appeal as much or even more then
bikes.

Correct - if you read his book "What if I had never tried it" you will get
that full story. Basically he says that he had the chance to go to Ducati
but chose Yamaha instead because he perceived Ducati to be much like Honda -
"brand above rider" - i.e. it doesn't matter which of the riders wins as
long as it's on a Ducati. The rider must conform to what the engineers
create.

Rossi wrote that he wanted to go someplace where he would be given priority
as the rider to shape the development of the bike to his taste - where he
would be respected and would be the focus of the program. This is what
Yamaha offered, so this is where he went. Rossi was also tired of people
saying he only won because he had the best bike, and wanted to prove them
wrong.. He was afraid that the same thing might happen if he rode a Ducati,
and to a great extent, with what people are saying about Stoner, he has been
proven right!

Cheers
