NICCOLO’ CANEPA WON HIS FIRST TITLE WITH THE DUCATI 1098S IN THE SUPERSTOCK
1000 CUP
The Ducati 1098S won the title at the Magny-Cours circuit in France today,
when young Italian Niccolò Canepa powered to the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup for
the Ducati Xerox Junior Team. Team-mate Brendan Roberts ended his season with
a harmless crash.
The race was held in the interval between the two Superbike races due to
early morning fog and at the start Canepa powered away behind leader Van
Keymeulen. All the Italian had to do was control his chief rival Claudio Corti and
the final laps proved to be decisive. With the final podium slot behind winner
Badovini and runner-up Corti, a third place was enough to give the title to
Canepa by four points.
NICCOLO’ CANEPA, 1000 FIM Superstock World Champion with 161 points
“It was a tough race, run at a fast pace. All I had to do was keep an eye on
Corti, but towards the end I began to have a few problems and I was unable
to go for the win. I just managed to avoid crashing a couple of times. When
Corti and Badovini passed me I was just trying to hold out to the end. I didn’t
see Badovini pass Corti and I only found out I had won on the slowing-down
lap. A big thanks to my family, Ducati and my engineers, it’s been a fantastic
season.”
Brendan Roberts ended what has been a difficult season with a harmless
crash. The young Australian had to retire and finished tenth overall in the
championship.
BRENDAN ROBERTS, 10th in Championship with 61 points
“It wasn’t a good end to the season but I’m pleased for the result and for
Niccolò. I didn’t have the best set-up and was having a few problems at the
front end of the bike. I crashed in the corner before the downhill stretch,
but I’ll be back next year!.”
Serafino Foti, Ducati Xerox Junior Team team manager, has now followed up
last year’s result with this important win. In 2006 Canepa finished runner-up
in the European 600 Superstock Championship, despite missing the end of the
season after a crash in an Italian Championship race.
SERAFINO FOTI, Ducati Xerox Junior Team Manager “It’s unbelievable and a
fantastic result. We’ve had an incredible season with what on paper looked to
be a really difficult project, a challenge that thanks to all the team we have
won. Everyone has given their all, Niccolò, Brendan and Domenico never gave
up and they’ve all done a fantastic job. Thanks to Ducati, who believed in
us, and to all of our sponsors and friends who have always given us their moral
support. This is my second season with the Junior Team and the results have
way exceeded our expectations. We are a winning team!”
