The fuel is also 18 months old?

Remove float bowls covers and clean (or change,best way) pilot and main fuel 
jets...if you smell a foul odor,remove the carbs and have/clean them 
completely.

Hell,i`d do a full tune-up on that thing,oil change,oil filter,plugs,fuel 
filter,clean carbs change jets have the battery checked...or even replace it 
(a bad battery can lead to all kind of expensive headaches).
