Tom,
I don't think frame sliders are necessarily meant to save the bodywork.
They're more valuable for preventing wear through on your crank & clutch
covers, frame and other structural bits. Also, sliders should be built to
self destruct at certain stress levels so that the mounts don't bend the
frame. As a side benefit they do tend to reduce the damage to bodywork, but
I wouldn't judge effectiveness on that basis solely. At the track, one
racer did suggest that I cut the Cycle Cat sliders down though so as to
reduce the likelihood that the slider will catch and flip the bike. Judging
by his leathers, I think he knew what he was talking about ;-) Sorry to
hear about your get off, but it sounds like you're back in the saddle which
is always great to see.
