[Ducati] Question on fuel tanks and range between fillups

I get around 45 per gal on my 06 S4R but it's not broke in yet. I expect that to go down once broke in because I will probably get heavy handed syndrome.

Subject: [Ducati] Question on fuel tanks and range between fillups

Given the notoriously inaccurate nature of the low-fuel warning light on Ducati motorcycles, I was wondering what type of real-world range anyone has gotten on the following:
ST3, 1098s, Monster S4rs
I get furstrated having the low fuel lights (or the gauge read low on the ST3) come on at about 100 miles, yet the bikes only taking 2 gallons of gas, implying we could have gone 200 miles. Of course, I don't want to carelessly go 200 miles and run out of fuel.
So, what type of range has anyone gotten from these machines?
Thanks!

Subject: [Ducati] NDC- possible carb issues with CCM? Help please

Good morning listers,

I've been having issues with my CCM supermoto lately and am asking for the
advice of the list. This CCM uses a 604cc Rotax motor with a single
dell'orto carb (at least I think that's what it is). In trying to diagnose
and solve other problems, I've replaced the coil, wire and plug. I've also
had the carb out several times. The issue now is this: in lower gears, the
motor runs fine. However, when you go full throttle (or near it) in higher
gears, where you have a long time in the gear, the engine "bucks" like it's
either starved for fuel or spark.

On Sunday, I fiddled with the air-fuel screw, going both in and out in 1/2
turn increments. There was no real change in the condition. I've also
swapped the old coil back in place to no avail.

I'm thinking there's not enough fuel in the float bowl and it's starving.
Any other hypotheses?

Thanks,

Garth

I own an 2004 ST3 with the performance pipes and chip. I usually get
around 220 per tank with my warning light coming on around 160 miles
(4 gallons used).

Subject: [Ducati] Texas Hill Country Ride

Peter,

Funny you should mention a ride. I have been busy with my transfer to Houston and in desperate need of some nice Hill Country scenery. A few of us are meeting for a ride this weekend. Whiting will be a no show this time around, but we have a group of about 5-6 committed. We are staying here:

http://www.leakeyspringscabins.com/

I will be arriving late as I can't leave Houston until after a meeting ends at 3:00 Friday afternnoon. We should be riding all day Saturday on the 33X roads and maybe a little Sunday AM. Anyone is welcome to join us. Email me at tojo92 at msn.com or call me at 956-497-4044 on my cell. Most of us have similiar riding styles. Not too crazy on the top speed thing in the straights, but wicked up a bit in the twisties. Staggered, ride at your own pace type stuff with an eye on a safe, fun, ride.

Hope a few others can make it. I won't be bringing a motard this time though. Hopefully we can plan another trip to hit you roads on the way to Luckenbach. Lots of fun for sure. I'll be on the SS/SP this trip.

Subject: Re: [Ducati] Question on fuel tanks and range between fillups

I have an S4Rs with the Termignoni full exhaust system/ECU.

The light comes on at ~90 miles on average (during a trackday, i got the low fuel light after about 70 miles) and once it's on... you are lucky to get more than 20 miles out of it. I learned this the hard way. Even when stock, I was lucky to get more than 100 miles before seeing the light come on

Range on this bike is quite poor and the 3.6-gal. (mfr. specified capacity) is quite small. I've
never been able to get more than 3.4-gal. into it, even when emtpy
(i.e., engine no longer runs and it is time to push).

I'd also be interested in hearing what other S4Rs owners, stock or otherwise, are experiencing.

For my 1098s, the warning light comes on way too soon at approx 85 miles (I've been watching) If I fill it just after the light comes on I can only get about 2 gallons in it, but I hate having that light stare me in the face. I've gone about 20 - 25 more miles before a fillup after the light comes on.

I might be able to help you out, if you're not in too much of a hurry - I scored a replacement set of stock 'cans on ebay last Winter, and subsequently found a full titanium Akrapovic "spaghetti systen" which is awaiting installation.

The stock 'cans are just that...are you interested?

Why aren't you running with the Ferrachi 'cans, anyway???

Dang Staton,

not gonna be available this time around, other plans committing the weekend.
So maybe next time. Especially since the weather is just starting to turn
nice, actually got down to the 80's earlier this week.

How about in a few more weeks?

Maybe Hopper could travel up with you guys.

Subject: [Ducati] re: who wants to buy an 848R? (alternative)

For those of us who have a little less cash, or not so grand a need for speed, but still want a tricked out "Ducati," Larry Pegram is also selling those Ducati logoed TNG scooters that the team used at the racetracks. He told me he is getting new ones this year, and so selling off the current ones. If you haven't seen them, you can see a picture at http://www.tngscooters.com/company/News/Pegram+Ducati+Aug+News/default.aspx
They are cute, and a very different way to ride a "Ducati"
I was tempted to get one (I can just see the looks it would get up at Alice's, after the two day ride to get there from Oakland), but have decided that the next 2 wheeler is going to be a electric assist bicycle (maybe I'll logo the frame and battery pack with the Ducati Corse stickers).

Hello Kevin
I will be selling the scooters for
$1599 for the black ones, have 3
$1799 for the red one that has racing pipe.
Please let me know if you are interested

Subject: Re: [Ducati] NDC- possible carb issues with CCM? Help please

Hmmmmm, these sorts of things can be so many causes, but my focus would be the carb, how is breather on bowl routed? how does fuel get from tank to bowl? Vacuum style petcock? Pump? Is all of that in order? When you pull carbs what do you do? I ask because I have a DRZ400SM and the slow jet has a real tendency to clog, also the original location of vaccum for petcock was sorry routing and it would pinch and you would lose vacuum to petcock erratically which will eventually cut off fuel flow. I ended up rerouting entirely and after running kehein CRs and Yosh ti pipe sold all and went back and rejetted the stock carb with much success. Do not forget slow jets have a huge imact on jetting that is often overlooked as jets somewhat overlap. a poorly chosen slow jet can cause top end issues. I saw this on a NSR 250 years ago, mains, needles nothing would correct the fact it just would not pull in high gear, it would fall flat on its face, upsized the slow jet
and miraculous recovery. Also some of these small jets are esp sensitive to the minutest of crap. I cleaned the original slow jet on the DRZ a number of times, each time it would be fine for awhile and then....same symptom. starting problematic needing excessive choke, throttle response sucks etc etc. So the point, look at carbs closely, clean them out well. granted pilot air screw can have a profound effect esp if slow jet is right size. if not the air screw will just be crap to crap or little to no effect. get it close and you will see the effect in and out. Also sometimes you have a couople of jet options, depends on how many turns of the air screw you make, esp if sizes in 2.5 increments like you find on some small jets.

Thanks,

Garth
