Yes the air gap between the pick up and the rotating engine part (primary gear?) does matter. I set my 998 to .6 - .7mm, after it had cut out issues above 8K. It worked. Not sure what Monster specs are, but is probably a good starting point.

You need different size spacers (between sensor and case on outside) to adjust, they come in .1mm increments.
