[Ducati] Timing pickup question ...

So, one of the ignition pickups in my Monster gave up the ghost a while back
(no continuity through it). I replaced it with a used one that I bought from
a lister but the bike sat for a while waiting for me to order gaskets and
such. I started it this morning only to find that it will idle fine but much
above idle the affected cylinder loosed it's spark.
I've tried switching coils and ignition units so I'm sure it's in the 
pickup. The question , I guess, is whether too large an air gap can cause 
this sort of behavior? Both sensors measure ~ 100ohms of resistance so I 
assume the unit is good ... HELP!!!
