I was on the production line during the early '80's at Piper Aircraft/Lakeland where we built the light twins (Aztec/Navajo/Cheyennes). Most used the air cooled pancakes (Contenental & Lycoming), some with 'charging'. While older technology and turning low revs, they are good fits to their tasks and run long and well if not abused and maintained (like all motors???)
Here in CT where many work at Pratt & Whitney, it is amazing the technology used to build aircraft engines. Check out this link:
