Most transport trucks are left idling for long periods due to cold weather startup problems or to keep onboard compressors running. This practice is changing with the higher fuel $$$ to smaller auxilliary units or with tie-ins available at truck stops.
Here in the states, new laws are being implemented that require ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) on-road fuels. Ford is trying out another version in their Super Duty trucks of the International/Navistar Power Stroke Diesel engines using a sophisticated small/large twin turbo setup and High Pressure Common Rail fuel technology. So far there have been mixed results. Even with state of the art electronics, the inevitable 'turbo lag' is there along with 'flame-thrower' exhausts. A big worry is that older engines need the higher sulfur to lube the fuel systems or use expensive replacement fuel additives. I have been using some in my farm tractor and keeping fingers crossed.
