AFAIK, the most efficient diesels obtain over 50% thermal efficiency 
(marine applications) and CAT already has machinery engines producing 
over 40% thermal efficiency (with a target goal of over 50% for future 
design/production).

As to Ron's question - it is used... in EGR systems, to reduce oxides of 
nitrogen (NOx) for emissions purposes.
