Agreed on the wheels, most bang for the buck. Although BST's are stretching
it as well as most people's wallets. Well, my wallet at least. I have five
spoke Marchesini mags and they were money well spent. I need a front five spoke
if anyone has one lying about for my other bike and wants to sell it.
Already bought the rear but cast five spokes are going by the way side as production
moved on to the 5/10 Y spoked forged hoops. Nice looking but not what I
prefer.
Why did you go with the 39's instead of the 41mm's with a 944 kit? It seems
a bit restrictive for the bigger bore.

I've got a 95 900 SS with 944, high compression, 39 mm Keihns & the Nichols
light (12 oz if I remember correctly). On the track or power touring
through the afar neighborhoods it was fine, although, it needed to be kept
over 4000 RPM to avoid unpleasant snatching.
When I put on a set of BST wheels, the most noticeable change was the
improvement in low RPM tractability (more noticeable than easier turn in).
After doing a little bit of thinking, I realized that the improvement was
due to the reduction in large flywheel (wheel) that is slightly out of phase
with the engine (due to chain variation). The BST wheel was an eight pound
reduction (not to mention the decrease in inertia due to significantly
reduced mass at wheel OD). And I won't go into the smoother shifting &
reduced tendency to lock the rear wheel during downshifting.
Bottom line - I recommend the lighter flywheel & would do it again.
