[Ducati] 999 Exhuast

Hey Roger,

No problem, glad to help. Another neato piece of info is that the 999/749's
realeased in North America...at least from '05 and up, already have the
"performance" air filters in the bike. So much to my surprise...I have a
spare set now. Of course after comparing the filters in my hand first :O)

About the swingarm....you're right.....they started the Box-type or "race"
swingarm in '05 and then it went on the 749's in '06 as well. You can tell
because the new swingarm looks like a box and the old one is rounded and
smooth, like yours. Like it's got a bow to it, good mental pic?

Here's the confusion about the sumps.....
So, a sump is a way of describing the bottom end of an engine...any engine
really. The Ducati 749/999 confusion is really easy when you look at the
motor. All 749's are shallow sump EXCEPT the 749R...which for some reason
they decided to go with the deep sump.

All 999's are DEEP SUMP
So, to tell if you have the deep sump or not.....
Look at the bottom end of your engine case.....where the oil filter
goes.....the deep sump motors have what looks like an upside-down pyramid
shape to the bottom of the engine.

The shallow sump motors, like my old 749D.....was pretty much flat.....and
"normal" looking. I'd have to say that the deep sump from Ducati is pretty
different looking than any other bike I've owned.

So, bottom line is......you have a deep sump, and you have the older
swingarm NOT the "race" or box-type.

As far as Titanium, etc.... It's cool...I like Ti and Carbon Fiber because
of the design ideas behind them....but honestly get what you want. Mine is
all steel and that was for pricing reasons.

If you're concerned with lap times or weight....the largest difference in
motorcycle racing is the rider. Drop some weight of your butt, take some
track lessons, and practice.

The reason why I got the steel kit and can was for the wallet. I figure I
can stop eating ice cream for 2 weeks and drop 10lbs instead of throwing
another $1000 bucks on a Ti can. But that's just my reasoning :O)

Hopefully that answered your questions and you got a little humor outa the
last part.
Let us know how it goes and enjoy the ride!

-Alex

Alex and Alex,

Thanks, very useful information, especially about the TPS. As far as I can
tell the two options for the 04 999 are the 50 and 54MM systems from Ducati,
and I would get the kit with the filters and ECM. I'm pretty new to these
bikes and I am finding out the 04 is different in ways from the other year
999's (swingarm and/or sump I am told by a few dealers), I was getting some
confusing info on what to order.

Thanks

Roger
