i have a 500 pantah in bits at work at the moment. been sitting since '91 i think. brake calipers seized, forks pitted, you get the idea. so far we're just under au$4,000 into it with only the wheels and fork legs painted and the tune up still to come, and the owner is realising we were serious when we said "this is a waste of money" before we started. pity, as it just leaves them pissed off at us because they wouldn't listen.
i had another one in last year for a 'get it going' job that wasn't as expensive, but it's so easy to spend a heap on them. one customer probably put au$20,000 into a 600 about 5 years ago. it was very nice when finished tho.
which is why, when someone asks about a resto, i tell them to think of a number they anticipate spending, then triple it and add 10%. if it's been done then that's great. of course it'll still be a slow old ducati that doesn't like running when it's cold and has crap suspension, but i know how enticing that can be.
enjoy.
