Geoff,
Once I got the wheels off and sent them off, it was about a week's
turnaround before I got them back refinished. I didn't put them back
on the bike right away, but it probably could have been a minimum 10
day downtime if I had everything ready.
Setting up the rear tire is the only tricky part. It's not
impossible for a shade-tree wrench to do at home and I've done it
well enough without any special tools (and then took it to the dealer
to make right). As long as you get the chain slack right and the
rear tire is 95% straight, it is ok to ride a short distance IMHO.
others here can chime in, but really, the recoating is pretty easy.
