Jeff, the torque value for the '96 900SS is between 23 and 25 Nm. Yours should be real close to that figure too.
   
  As to the stud that screwed out, you need to clean it up and then locktite it in plave then use antisieze on the nut when you put it back after the locktite has set up. 
   
  Studs are used in aluminum cases as opposed to bolts for a purpose. To protect the weaker aluminum threads from being worn out from frequent use in the case of a bolt, a stud is used instead. This also helps to preclude pulled or cross threaded threads ( and the attending use of a helicoil as a cure). The engine side of a stud will generally be a coarse thread for better strength in the ally case and the other end will be fine threads for better retention with a nut.
