Well, it happened to my '91 907IE, and I am sure there are many other  
bikes with leaking countershaft seals out there.  I have usually left  
my chain loose, but maybe not loose enough.

However, I also own a couple of old Brit Bikes with engines that  
split horizontally, which means that some leakage that is inevitable,  
so a few drops of oil and associated collected spooge don't bother me  
that much.  On the 907IE, at least, the seals have to be replaced  
from the inside, which means that the engine has to come completely  
apart.  The rest of the engine and tranny ain't broke, so there is  
nothing but the seal(s) that needs fixing.  I'll live with that.
