FWIW we had one displayed in the Mid Ohio VMD display, Ralph and Linda
Poole's very tidy 500 Sport Desmo, and as a result I met a couple of people that
have them and ride them. They both introduced themselves to thank us for
including this model which has taken such a, (in their opinion unfair) beating for
so long. In both cases I felt I was speaking to about as enthusiastic and
passionate an owner as Ducati can lay claim to. They both had many years of
great service out of the bikes and felt they had suffered unfairly over the
years - neither of these guys had much to offer in the way of horror stories,
only about how rewarding they were to ride (great handling was mentioned by
them as well) and how long and good they had preformed. And they both really,
really rode the bikes, many miles, many years. I have no personal experience,
just thought this was worth a post since parallel twins don't come up very
often..

There are two reasons, one they didn't fit the oil
pumps in them very well, and they used mismatched metal plugs on the
end of the cams. They resulted in oil starvation and the big ends
blow. With a shim job on the oil pump and some other work they don't
blow up.
