FWIW we had one displayed in the Mid Ohio VMD display, Ralph and Linda  
Poole's very tidy 500 Sport Desmo, and as a result I met a couple of people  that 
have them and ride them. They both introduced themselves to thank us  for 
including this model which has taken such a, (in their opinion  unfair) beating for 
so long.  In both cases I felt I was speaking to  about as enthusiastic and 
passionate an owner as Ducati can lay claim to.   They both had many years of 
great service out of the bikes and felt they had  suffered unfairly over the 
years - neither of these guys had much to offer in  the way of horror stories, 
only about how rewarding they were to ride (great  handling was mentioned by 
them as well) and how long and good they had  preformed. And they both really, 
really rode the bikes, many miles, many years.  I have no personal experience, 
just thought this was worth a post since  parallel twins don't come up very 
often..

There  are two reasons, one they didn't fit the oil
pumps in them very well, and  they used mismatched metal plugs on the
end of the cams. They resulted in  oil starvation and the big ends
blow. With a shim job on the oil pump and  some other work they don't
blow up.
