"I have a 1998 916 mono and it has an Ohlins rear shock. I seem to
remember that in 1998, the mono had Ohlins and the Biposoto had Showa.
However everyone I see tells me that is not the case. I was just
wondering if the person that owned it before me added this, or was it
stock (USA version). "

To my recollection and another knowledgable source, in '98 the mono and the
biposto both came with the standard Showa shock. The '98 916 SPS (996
engine) came with Showa fork and Ohlins shock. I'm not aware of an R model
for that year. I've got a '98 SPS and even with it's puny by today's
standards 121 rwhp, it's still a beast.
