I totally agree with you Brad.
I've never seen so many drop the cash for C/F Bling and then squeal like a
pig over a chip, or a set of slipons. After all it is a race bike... : )

In all of my years messing with motors I've never felt so helpless with
these bikes. Everything on these bikes for the do it yourself type is a
challenge. Back in 99 when you asked someone for tips, all they would say
is, Send me you bike and I'll get "this" from it. Hell, That's no fun!

TPS is easy, cam timing takes a bit of effort and some tools as well as
understanding of the process, idle mixture can be done by ear if you know
what your after and throttle balance can be done with some carb stixs. I bet
at the most 15% of bike owner have done some of this.

It just isn't worth while to drop all the cash to purchase the software to
tune one bike properly, without a Dyno. I've thought about purchasing a Dyno
and hanging a shingle over it just to tune Ducati's if I bought the
software. It would be something to do for fun, because I don't think I'll
get rich doing so. Maybe I will when I'm done with my work here in Phoenix.
Now I know why the singles have such a following, you can tune carbs and
mess with the timing if your crafty. One of the main reasons it's taken me
so long to build both of my bikes is that I'm going to need to haul them
both up to Doug Lofgren to tune them! A PC isn't going to cut it with these
bikes or even a over the counter chip. So they both better be complete.
I'm not going to make two trips for two bikes, and I might even be taking
another bike that belongs to someone else along with me, a local fellow has
asked me already. Few understand the importance of a good tuner. It's a
small group of folks with some high strung projects bikes.

Let's say we get everything setup right on the trackday bike, OK. Pipes,
filters, gearing, airbox mods.

The FIM chip software has 7 zones to work from, while the PC has over 256
points to plot fuel from. Hell the PC works from zero and at every 500 rpm
points to 16,000 rpm and then every ten degrees of throttle rotation. The
FIM chip gives you control over the ignition map. The PC gives you crap! The
FIM software for 1.5 ECU mimics the PC in it's fuel mapping capabilities,
and has ignition mapping as well.

It's like my 999R, the PC is the only thing out there for it at the moment,
for fueling. While the race ECU ignition map is pretty good, I think it
could be a bit better, but I'll never know.

So with a good bike setup and a good chip, a PC will give the trackday
rider/racer better throttle control on the track. This is why you see this
combination at the local track. For the average guy. Like you said, a chip
will work just fine.

These guys below are entering the 5.9 market, with this you could build a
custom map for both fuel and ignition.

We'll see just how well they do.
As for the P7-8, 1.6,1.5 Doug is the Man! Without a doubt.
