What usually (as in always) happens when a designer/team is tasked to develop a new model, they look at everything past, current and future (still in the making at other OEMs) that they can get their hands on. So in 1987/88 when the 916 team started, in 1992 when Honda came out with its design and today, ideas are being exchanged (sometimes even with mutual agreement), hence the occasional resemblances. To get a great bike to market you have to design, engineer, test all components, systems and the whole. What was brilliant about the 916 is how beautifully Tamburini/team integrated it all. This accomplishment is, IMHO, still unmatched by the 1098, although it's a lot prettier than the 999.

HE did admit to using that buke as his inspiration for the 916 design. Every aspect is the same from the swing are the the lights to the intakes....
Both great designs in biking history, and the 1098 looks great!
I still think that my 92 SS is a beautiful design and is right up there with the bikes mentioned above...just dosen't get the press time! Any where I go I get complimented from Harley dudes to poeple who don't have a clue about bikes...she looks striking in yellow with the white frame!!!!
Cheers,

If you take a look at Honda NR750, you might be amazed how similar it is
to 916. The horizontal placed headlamps, dual under-seat muffler,
single-sided swingarm, etc. Yet NR750 was produced in 1992, one year
before Ducati unveiled their descendant of 888.
But it doesn't matter. I still love my 916. And I think 1098 looks great.
Here are some pictures from the brochure of NR750.
