I think the big downside is that more boutique brands will not be able to
compete. I thought it was cool that Bimota won the championship a bunch of
years ago. You'll never see that again with the new rules.

Exactly Alex! The specials will have more of the performance meaty items
on
them and the trinkets and niceties will be left off in order to keep the
homologation bike prices from going stratospheric. Still, in order to keep
the
bike competitive the needed items, titanium rods etc. will push special bike
prices into the range of maybe MV specials, $45k and up. That's bad for
those
of us who don't have that kinda dosh laying about but I suspect they will
sell even if some of them end up languishing for a while.
Course it could end up hurting Ducati if they have such a difficult time
selling them that they end up having to sell them at a loss in order to go
racing. That might mean increasing costs on the rest of the lineup to
compensate.
I can see the number crunchers working overtime already.
Cheers,
W

What they won't have is the silly stuff that the rules allow them to change
so the bike buyer will get the real stuff that Ducati isn't allowed to
change. Better rods and trick cams for example while you won't see carbon
body work or Ohlins forks which all the manufactures can put on their
bikes.
