while i doubt a std comp carby 900 would ever ping, i remember customers commenting that they ran better and smoother on premium than the basic unleaded.  might have more to do with the single step ignition system than anything else.  my 600 monster with the cam timing advanced was certainly roughter at low rpm on basic unleaded than with premium.
