I have to agree with Michael.  Even a phrase book with a cd runs 
about $12.  We recently went to Portugal and it was incredibly 
useful.  Wife speaks Romanian and Spanish and I have Spanish and some 
Dutch.  However, Portuguese has VERY hard pronunciation, imho.

I think the title we got was Getting by in...

Italian is easier to pick up that German, imho, even though German 
has more cognates with English.
