[Ducati] regulator for 500SL

hi all,
I need to get a replacement regulator-rectifier for a 1981 500SL  
Pantah.  New to the duck (a gorgeous bike), ducati's in general and  
this mailing list so on a bit of a learning curve :)

The part's manual says I'm after a 12v-18A unit, 2 wires going to the  
alternator, + and - to the battery, and 1 to the gen light (which  
previously went via the voltimeter but now straight to the light -  
looks like a mod by the previous owner).

Is anyone able to tell me whether a non-Ducati part will suit? One  
supplier has said he thinks he can provide a jap bike part to do the  
job, if I have a "2 stator" alternator? - really unclear what he  
means by that.

Hoping someone can clear the fog a bit for me
