Vicki,
I don't know where you're coming from, but having lived in NYC for a
few years and being on a budget while there, I would always fly to
Newark if I could. It gives you the chance to use the train into the
city (saving over $45 in car service) and is reasonably easy to get
flights into. Second from that would be JFK--further away than LGA,
but again you can use the train into the city.
And for cheap fare comparison, I love Kayak (www.kayak.com)
