Thanks Vicki,
yes I did know about that route, but of course another thing is that
everyone must be an AMA member, unless things changed, and that was always
an issue to some folks about joining a DOC or any other club. And the bottom
line of course is that club officers can be sued anyway, so some form of
legal insurance that provides lawyers is good. Then of course there is the
question of whether it is non profit or for profit. Last time I went thru
this stuff in New Mexico for a racing group, we eventually did the for
profit because it provided better protection.

However at the World President's Meeting in 06, some other USA president
mentioned doing 'destination rides', where the idea was to not have an
'organized ride' but rather just to meet at some destination. That way,
there is no organized ride, and everyone is on their own. In many ways, it
seemed the best solution.

Of course there is no way that it is as much fun as being met by a gang
riding Ducatis on the outskirts of Rome, and escorted in one big mob into
the city, with the Rome Ducati club members pulling up and blocking side
traffic to let us all go thru, running red lights and all. Even the
Carabinieri merely did a disinterested look in our direction and then
continued a conversation he was having as 100 roaring Ducatis went flying by
on our way to the coliseum. But that's not gonna happen in USA either.

FYI - This insurance is available through the AMA. They have several
programs for risk management that offer insurance and the cost is extremely
minimal
as long as you attend the seminar and follow the guidelines the insurance
carrier requires (all standard stuff IMHO).. It's not something Ducati or
any
manufacturer would normally offer as far as I know. I have attended the
risk
management seminar, it's informative and free for clubs and event
promoters.
They do require a club have a charter but I think the DOC charter would
meet
the guidelines just fine.
