So, you've moved to the dark side and see no need for unions because you are so wise and benevolent. Typical, but I'll put more trust in my union brethren if you don't mind. I work as a boiler operator in a refinery, we take waste CO gas, waste refinery gas and use it to produce 600# steam at 745 degrees. Needless to say, this stuff can be hazardous and/or down right explosive. Recently some of us suspected that we had a tube leak as our water usage seemed to be creeping up relative to our steam make and as the #1 operator on duty I had all workers come down from the structure. I had engineers telling me that I was wrong, they would investigate but that in their judgment it would be alright to allow people to return to the structure. An obviously irritated refinery assistant manager said to me quote, " I think all this talk about a tube lead is much adoo about nothing". I held my ground because I knew that when it came to safety operators had the last word and I had
the backing of my union. Without the union to back me up they could have fired, or threatened to fire me and I would have probably caved. About 4 hours later the leaking tube indeed failed, catastrophically, and I received warm round of applause when I entered the central control room later. I know unions can be a pain and are too often corrupt but if used correctly they make life a lot better for all of us, including management folks. I personally admire the current workers at Harley who are putting their jobs on the line for the benefit of those who are hired later. Lets hope that they and the owners will reach common ground sooner than later because a long strike will benefit no one. MC content- Harleys are motorcycles it is alledged. Later, Moonbeam

These guys at Yorkville are a bunch of spoiled brats. I despise unions - I
used to be in one when I worked at Firestone in the seventies. The union
eventually caused the factory to close down, eliminating about 3000 jobs in
Memphis, TN. If management is doing their job, there is no need for a
bargaining unit.
MC content - we made MC tires at Firestone, but I sure as hell would not run
them on my bike!
