[Ducati] 500SL electrical problem

This is kinda why my dealer and I have come to an amicable understanding - I ride the bikes, they fix the bikes. It ends up cheaper this way. They only have to fix the things that go wrong and not the things I break trying to fix the things that go wrong.

They are pretty nice. They had a deal for winter service which I took advantage of; free pickup and delivery and 15 % off both parts and labor. This was a nice saving on a 600 mile service on a Sport 1000.

thanks Rich (and others who contributed). I've got the problem fixed
tonight, so all is well again and I'm very happy about that.

I connected the battery up wrong(!), and that's pretty embarassing at
my age, however all is not as straightforward as it seems. The
initial connection was 2 wires on the -ve and 3 on the +ve. My
mistake was not marking the cables as I disconnected them, thinking
it would only be an afternoon charging the battery and I'd remember.
It actually became a week by the time I found the battery was stuffed
and sourced a new one. By then, I just went off the colour coding on
the wires to reconnect. Unfortunately, the main active red wire to
the fuse box was covered in a thick black(!) plastic sleeve. So,
guess where I connected it.

1 regulator, 4 days, and more than a few beers later I found the
problem by unhooking the whole front end to test the current to the
ignition switch and work my way back. Very much the long way I know,
but I'm no electrician and all I had was the wiring diagram I found
on the web and a volt meter. More than a few lessons there for me I
guess. For the offending cable, I've now covered about 7cm of the
black sheath with red insulation tape.

On the upside, I fixed it myself, got to know a lot more about the
bike, I'll now be able to properly secure a loose ignition switch and
fix the headlight glass, and re-do the flaking paint on the dash.

cheers all,
Frank

. As dumb as that may sound

12.45 is still low, fully charged should be high 12s
to low 13s. Suspect connections somewhere. Rich
