Barry, top of the tool list for dropping your crank....a shop manual, two different are even better!
Then there are several cheap ways of accruing tools. Hit the pawn shops and tool sales. Gather some every weekend or send the wife off to one end of the Mall while you indulge yourself at Sears toy...err, tool section!
As to the more expensive machinist type tools you can go to Enco (www.use-enco.com) or go to Grizzly (www.grizzly.com). They cover good but cheaper tools. Grizzly's prices have surprised me. The Brown & Sharpe, Starretts, Mitutoyo, etc are fine if you're a professional machinist and have a very deep pocket, but the others will be more than adequate. And the MSC catalog...talk about an adult Christmas toy catalog! <LOL>
Hand tooling is very well covered by Sears' Craftsman line and they're pretty well ubiquitous.
But the main tool you need is the manual!
Bite bullet, chew your nails and when it's all done, you'll have braggin' rights that a typical Hardleyite can't fathom!
