[Ducati] magic in Chico (was: Christmas tress and winter rides)

The only Michael Moore I know is the guy in San Francisco that used to sell
the Rita ignitions. Great guy, some interesting frame projects and stuff. Is
there another one doing bikes? Anyway, sounds like you found the right guy
to help with the 900 there Kevin, so glad to hear you are hooked up and
moving forward.

Apparently you survived your wild birthday party :-)

Peter

> The magic in Chico is Craig Hanson of Hanson Racing Technology. I think
his name pops up on other lists sometimes. As far as I know, he doesn't
specialize in any manufacturer or towards any specific purpose, but knows
Ducks very well, and has been modifying them for years (dare I say
"decades?"). He seems to do everything to make a bike faster and better
handling. If you can still find the write-up, he and Michael Moore
(different Michael Moore), did some fairly extensive work on Michael's Aly
650 that he was racing at the time. Craig built a 2 into 1 exhaust for my
Aly, which greatly improved the engine's power delivery. A couple of years
later, he rebuilt the Aly motor: rings, porting, some transmission parts
(there is an epic tale), cam timing, squish bands; and that motor is still
one of the sweetest I've ever seen. He is slowly expanding his capabilities,
and can now ceramic coat the exhausts he builds. His shop looks more like a
salvage garage than a high performance shop, but he seems to know where
everything is and keeps track of all his projects. He works slowly (at
times, it seemed glacial), but seems to tinker the bike into its best
performance (he takes the time to get it right, rather than rushing to get
it off the lift for the next customer). My experience so far is limited to
the 2 jobs for the Aly, but I will be able to tell you more after the work
on the 900. Others have sung his praises for a variety of jobs (just Google
"Hanson Racing Technology"). I think that if you can live with his
idiosyncracies, his work on air cooled twins is about as good as it gets
(outside Ducati Corse), and his fees are bargains when compared to the fancy
shops in higher rent neighborhoods around the US.
